LBFD Public Information Officer / Firefighter Jake Heflin tells LBREPORT.com that at about 10:40 p.m. (Oct. 1), an LBFD rescue boat heard the call on a Coast Guard radio channel and immediately headed to the scene. The rescue crew learned that an individual was starting a scuba dive (had just entered the water) when he experienced chest discomfort and moments of unconsciousness.

PIO Heflin says those on the dive boat brought the patient back onto their boat, where CPR began; the rescue boat crew found the patient in full arrest; LBFD's rescue boat team began intervention, transported the patient to the Khoury long dock where Rescue 8 and Engine 14 continued life support intervention to which the patient didn't respond. The patient was transported to St. Mary Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased at 11:09 p.m.

PIO Heflin says the man was believed to be in his late 40s. LBPD is now investigating. Further as we learn it.
