(Oct. 27, 2015) -- Higher than usual high tides -- nearing what are generally considered "King Tides" -- will occur at midmorning today Oct. 27 through Oct. 29 (just under 7 feet)...and will reoccur at slightly higher levels Nov. 24 through 26 (touching 7 feet on two days.) Monday's (Oct. 26) midmorning high tide reached 6.6 feet...and it's predicted to reach 6.8 deet at about 9:20 a.m. Tuesday (Oct. 27) and 6.9 feet at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday (Oct. 28), with 6.7 feet expected at 10:40 a.m. Thursday (Oct. 29.) And a little less than a month from now, there'll be even higher high tides with 6.9 feet expected on Nov. 24 (7:18 a.m.), 7.0 feet on Nov. 25 (7:57 a.m.) and 7.0 feet on Nov. 26 (8:37 a.m.) [Scroll down for further.] |
These are periodic, naturally occurring phenomena and produce unusual sights in and around the Naples area as the water level rises higher...and in some areas overtakes beach sand. Photo by Bruce Tennant King Tides occur roughly twice a year when the Earth, Moon and Sun line up and maximize the gravitational forces that produce tides. They're not a tsunami; the water gently rises, then gradually recedes. In December 2012, a local King Tide reached roughly 7.33 feet.
