(Oct. 29, 2016) -- A teenage boy was shot on Friday night (Oct. 28) in West Long Beach's Silverado Park (Santa Fe Ave./31st St., 7th dist.) and LBPD is investigating what occurred as possibly gang-related.
LBPD Watch Commander Lt. In September 2016, the City Council voted to adopt a FY17 budget recommended by Mayor Robert Garcia that -- despite June 2016 LB voter approval of a sales tax increase to 10% -- failed to restore LBPD's former field anti-gang unit (20 officers + 2 sergeants.) LBPD's current internal gang unit handles investigations, follow-ups, court appearances and the like. The Council's Sept. 2016 budget vote restored 10 officers out of roughly 200 officers that Long Beach taxpayers no longer receive as a result of Council budget actions since FY10. The Council's September 2016 budget vote left LB taxpayers with a budgeted police level for citywide deployment roughly equivalent per capita to what Los Angeles would have if L.A. Mayor Garcetti and the L.A. City Council cut roughly 30% of LAPD's officers. Most of the shootings we reported below were either confirmed as or investgated as possibly gang related by LBPD.
