(Oct. 29, 2016) -- A teenage boy was shot on Friday night (Oct. 28) in West Long Beach's Silverado Park (Santa Fe Ave./31st St., 7th dist.) and LBPD is investigating what occurred as possibly gang-related.

LBPD Watch Commander Lt. Dina Zapalski tells LBREPORT.com that at about 7:20 p.m., LBPD responded to reports of several shots fired; a preliminary investigating indicates a group had gathered and were fired upon; a 17 year old male was hit; he was transported to a hospital with what are believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.

2014 to date: Red Xs=homicides; Blue Xs= shootings, person wounded; Brown Xs=shots fired at victim(s), not hit; Purple Xs=shots at occupied residence/vehicle; Green Xs= shots at unoccupied vehicle/residence; Grey Xs=shots fired (no hit, no target identified); Orange X's=non-fatal stabbings. Map is unofficial. A separate map (not shown here) indicates add'l shootings in NLB.

In September 2016, the City Council voted to adopt a FY17 budget recommended by Mayor Robert Garcia that -- despite June 2016 LB voter approval of a sales tax increase to 10% -- failed to restore LBPD's former field anti-gang unit (20 officers + 2 sergeants.) LBPD's current internal gang unit handles investigations, follow-ups, court appearances and the like. The Council's Sept. 2016 budget vote restored 10 officers out of roughly 200 officers that Long Beach taxpayers no longer receive as a result of Council budget actions since FY10.

The Council's September 2016 budget vote left LB taxpayers with a budgeted police level for citywide deployment roughly equivalent per capita to what Los Angeles would have if L.A. Mayor Garcetti and the L.A. City Council cut roughly 30% of LAPD's officers.

Most of the shootings we reported below were either confirmed as or investgated as possibly gang related by LBPD.
