(Oct. 7, 2016, 6:05 a.m.) -- Three Long Beach firefighters suffered electrocution-type injuries sufficient to send them to a hospital for observation this morning (Oct. 7) in battling a blaze that involved four garages in the 5300 block of Cedar Ave.
Electrical injuries are always a risk (water + electricity) said LBFD Public Information Officer/Firefighter Jake Heflin, but on this blaze the electrical panel couldn't be secured and LBFD had to phone Edison to shut off the power while fighting the flames. Some wires were down and some household items remained energized, and a number of firefighters reported feeling electrical current as they battled the blaze. Three firefighters reported dizziness and not feeling well consistent with electrical injuries...and they were transported to a hospital for observation with injuries officially described as "minor." LBFD says its first unit (Engine 11) arrived on scene at 1:38 a.m. within two minutes of dispatch and multiple units followed to knock down the flames (photos below.) [Scroll down for further.] |
