(Oct. 9, 2016, UPDATED 5:15 p.m. from 2:15 p.m.) -- Initial information is sketchy, but LBREPORT.com is told by LBFD Public Information Officer / Firefighter Jake Heflin that a man (adult) participating in the bicycle portion of this morning's (Oct. 9) Long Beach Marathon was transported to a hospital in cardiac arrest from the area of Ocean Blvd./Prospect Ave. in Belmont Shore (one block east of Ximeno Ave.).

UPDATE: The man's condition wasn't immediately known after he arrived at the hospital, but at 5:15 p.m., the L.A. County Coroner's office (per Lt. Dietz) told LBREPORT.com that the man had died. [end UPDATE]

PIO Heflin says LBFD Race Rescue 3 (a unit specially assigned to the Marathon) was already performing CPR on the man at Ocean Blvd./Prospect Ave. when Engine 8 (newly restored) and Rescue 14 responded at roughly 6:27 a.m. LBFD Paramedics transported the man to a hospital in cardiac arrest.

The LB Marathon website indicates the "2016 Bike Tour" is a 20 mile event, starts at 6 a.m. from Shoreline Dr. [south of the LB Arena] and is un-timed (except for those riding as as part of the Marathon's "Combo" and we don't know the man's registration status.)

The LB Marathon website says the Bike Tour provides "avid and leisure cyclists alike the opportunity to ride one of the most beautiful Bike Tours in Southern California. The Bike Tour starts promptly at 6:00 am. It is a safe, scenic and fully closed 20 mile course." Race organizers said there was no race-day pick up for race items (unless the participant purchased a special service in advance); race organizers required participants to pick up race day items at a "Health and Fitness Expo" on Friday Oct. 7 or Saturday. Oct. 8.
