Sept. 23: LB Man Fatally Shot, Another Man Wounded, 1100 block Hellman Ave. (b/w Alamitos Ave. and Orange Ave. near Cerritos Ave.)

(September 26, 2002) -- A 27 year old LB man was fatally shot, and another man wounded, in the late afternoon of Sept. 23 in the 1100 block of Hellman Ave. (roughly between Alamitos Ave. and Orange Ave. near Cerritos Ave.) in the 1st Council district.

Police say that at approximately 4:48 p.m., they responded to a call of gunshots in the area and found a shooting victim lying on the ground who'd sustained an unknown number of gunshot wounds to his upper torso.

LBFD Paramedics responded and transported him to a local hospital where he died of his injuries. He was identified as 27-year-old Kevin Brooks of Long Beach.

Meanwhile, a male Black who was walking a short distance away from the first shooting was also shot. He sustained an injury to his leg and he was in stable condition.

LBPD says its preliminary investigation revealed that three male Hispanic suspects fled the scene in a vehicle, possibly a rust colored Toyota.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to call LBPD Homicide Detectives Steven Smith or Hector Nieves at (562) 570-7244.
