County Supervisors Knabe & Antonovich Agendize Sept. 24 Board Motion Supporting LB City Council's Resolution Urging Use of Outlying Airports With Underutilized Capacity As Alternative To Increasing Flights At LB Airport

We post text of proposed Board of Supervisors Motion

(September 19, 2002) -- On Septembe 24, the L.A. County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to take up a motion by Supervisors Don Knabe (district includes LB) and Mike Antonovich (northern L.A. County including Palmdale) that would encourage state, federal and local legislators and administrators to evaluate using outlying airports with underutilized capacity in less residentially developed areas as an alternative to increasing flights at LB Airport.

The material accompanying the September 24 agenda item states:

MOTION BY SUPERVISORS MICHAEL D. ANTONOVICH September 24, 2002 AND DON KNABE LONG BEACH AIRPORT

On August 27, 2002, the Long Beach City Council unanimously adopted a resolution calling for the development of a regional air transportation plan that would fairly allocate the burden and benefits of air transportation across the region. In order to ensure that flight service is provided throughout the county and not concentrated in one area, a regional approach, which considers all available airports, was endorsed as a policy direction.

I, THEREFORE, MOVE that the Board of Supervisors support the Long Beach City Council’s resolution to encourage State, Federal and local legislators and administrators, to evaluate using outlying airports with underutilized capacity in less residentially developed areas as an alternative to increasing flights at Long Beach Airport.

The proposed motion follows Board of Supervisors' action in June (motion by Knabe) to support two LB Council resolutions (from May) urging maintenance of LB's Airport Noise Compatibility Ordinance and noise budgeted flight limits. The Board motion also directed the County's legislative advocates (the County's paid lobbyists in DC and Sacramento) to support LB's efforts to maintain the city's Airport noise ordinance.
