(Sept. 3, 2002) -- A wild and dangerous police pursuit went through parts of NLB, WLB and Bixby Knolls in the 10 p.m. hour on Monday Sept. 2 before transitioning onto the 91 freeway (west) and the 110 freeway (south) and ending with the driver's arrest in the San Pedro area.
LBPD used a spike strip in NLB which may have blown out one tire...although the vehicle kept going and at times reached speeds estimated at 40-50 mph.
The suspect vehicle sideswiped and damaging a parked car in NLB and hit and possibly killing a cat. However, no one was seriously injured as the chase wound its way through LB city streets in the NW corner of the city.
At one point, the chase headed south on LB Blvd., turned east on Del Amo and went right past the North Division LBPD police station in Scherer Park, turned south on Atlantic Ave. and west on San Antonio not far from the exclusive Virginia Country Club area.
The pursuit was televised live in part of prime time on KCAL (9) and KTTV (11) before spilling over into some 11 p.m. local newscasts on KABC-TV (7) and KCBS-TV (2).
CHP took over the chase when it returned to the freeways. The pursuit ended in a container yard near the L.A.harbor shortly after 11 p.m. by which time the suspect's car was on rims and throwing sparks.
When the suspect tried to flee on foot, he was captured, cuffed and taken away by CHPs.
