(Sept. 3, 2003) -- Roughly 1,200 people filled the CSULB quad this afternoon to hear gubernatorial recall candidate Arnold Schwarzenegger call incumbent Gray Davis and Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamante the "twin terminators of Sacramento" in remarks frequently interrupted by applause...and preceded by someone hurling an egg at the candidate as he entered.
As he strode down a runway leading from a building to the quad, an egg splattered on the left shoulder of Mr. Schwarzenegger's coat; within moments he removed his coat, proceeded to the stage and delivered his remarks as if nothing happened.
About a half hour before Mr. Schwarzenegger's arrival, Vice Mayor Frank Colonna, a CSULB alumnus, greeted the crowd.
"We know why we're here today: to help Arnold become the next Governor of California," said Mr. Colonna, drawing applause.
Local and national news media turned out in force.
The crowd cheered Mr. Schwarzenegger and waved both printed and hand-made signs.
We arrived well before Mr. Schwarzenegger's remarks...and the area in front of the podium was already packed.
This shot was taken from a distance with a sizable crowd in between.
Roughly a dozen demonstrators carried signs opposing the recall and Prop 54; some scattered signs opposing Mr. Schwarzenegger were also visible.
Mr. Schwarzenegger's CSULB appearance was scheduled a few hours before the first statewide televised debate that featured recall candidates Sen. Tom McClintock, Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante, former baseball commissioner Peter Ueberroth, author Arianna Huffington and Green Party candidate Peter Camejo. Mr. Schwarzenegger was invited to participate in that debate...and declined. He has accepted an invitation for a single debate later this month.
