ELB Tragedy: 94 Yr-Old Driver Strikes & Kills 86 Yr-Old Pedestrian Attempting to Cross Palo Verde Ave. Out of a Crosswalk

(Sept. 7, 2004) -- LBPD says a 94-year old driver struck and killed an 86-year old pedestrian who was attempting to cross Palo Verde Ave. at Barbanell St. (b/w Spring & Willow Sts., vicinity Millikan High) out of a crosswalk on Sunday, Sept. 5 shortly before 10:00 a.m.

LBPD says its preliminary investigation indicates that a 1996 Toyota pick-up truck driven William Alford, 94, of LB struck Margaret Foulds, 86, of LB who was attempting to cross Palo Verde Ave. from the SE corner of Palo Verde at Barbanell St. and was out of a cross walk when hit. Ms. Foulds was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

An LBReport.com reader emailed us, wondering if there'd been a shooting, since the reader observed officers meticulously pouring over the area shortly after 11 a.m. LBPD says that after a fatal traffic accident, officers routinely process the scene in detail.

LBPD Public Information Officer Greg Schirmer tells LBReport.com that no criminal charges are pending.

LBPD asks anyone with information about the accident to contact Accident Invstigations Detective Brian Watt at (562) 570-5520.
