Man Is Shot, Alley 1000 block Dawson/St. Louis (just east of Cherry)

(September 8, 2012, 1:15 a.m.) -- Minutes before midnight Friday night (nearly Sat. a.m.), a man was found shot in an alley in the 1000 block of Dawson Ave./St. Louis Ave. (just east of Cherry Ave.). The area is in the 4th Council district, just north of the 2nd dist. Rose Park neighborhood.

In very early information, LBPD Public Information Officer Nancy Pratt says the victim was transported to a hospital and LBPD's investigation is ongoing.

The shooting is the latest among several in recent months in the western part of the 4th Council district.

On August 10, 2012 a man (adult) was shot in the 1600 block of Sherman Place (just east of Cherry Ave., south of PCH)
On July 18, 2012 a male (age uncertain) was shot in the 1500 block of Gaviota Ave. (between Anaheim and PCH) by two shooters who fled on bicycles.
On July 8, 2012 a man was fatally shot in broad daylight shortly before 5 p.m. in the area of 14th St. between Cherry and Junipero Aves.
On May 4, 2012 a teenage girl and an adult woman were both hit by gunfire in what police said appeared to be an exchange of gunfire between two groups in the 1600 block of Stanton Place.

These areas are at the western edge of LBPD's East Division, where officers in declining numbers (due to Mayor/management advised, Council majority enacted LBPD budget reductions since Sept. 2009) must cover an area stretching east to El Dorado Park and south to 2nd St. in Belmont Shore. The western portion of the 4th Council district has been experiencing these conditions for some time:

In April, 2011: 19-year-old Oscar Vega was fatally shot in the area of Anaheim St/Molino Ave.
In March 2010, an 18 yr old man was shot and wounded inside a business -- at midafternoon -- in the area of 15th St./Cherry Ave.
On January 30, 2010, an 18 year old man was fatally shot at 15th St./Stanley Ave.
In December 2009, a man was shot in the 2200 block of E. 15th St. (east of Cherry)
In October 2009, a double-shooting took place in the 1600 block of Sherman Place (east of Cherry).
On April 4, 2009, 27-year-old Garret Norris shot dead in the area of Temple and Spaulding. He'd been playing basketball at Orizaba Park and was fatally shot while trying to retrieve property that had been stolen from him. Norris was and engineer and a USC grad. Tevin Harris, who was 15 at the time of the shooting, was tried as an adult for the murder.
On January 1, 2009, A couple, Sarith Em and Vannaly Tim , were shot to death in their car at Gardenia and PCH just after midnight on New years Day. 24-year-old Em was an Army veteran who had served in Desert Storm.
And in March, 2008 a double-walk up shooting occurred on 15th St. just east of Cherry Ave. that took the life of 11 year old Jose Bailey and wounded another person. A description by one of the Emergency Room doctors who treated the 11 year old's fatal wounds was printed by the PressTelegram, which then submitted it for an award (and won).
