(Sept. 18, 2012, UPDATED 5:00 p.m.) -- A Gelson's market is coming to the corner of PCH/2nd St.

In a release on its website, Gelson's says:

Gelsonís has entered into a lease for a location at the corner of Pacific Coast Highway and East 2nd Street in Long Beach. While the development and actual opening of the location is subject to (among other things) necessary governmental approvals, Gelsonís is scheduled to take possession of the property on March 1, 2013. After an extensive remodel, the anticipated opening is in late 2013.

"We are very eager to expand into Long Beach, itís a natural fit for Gelsonís and we are excited to be a part of the community there," says Rob McDougall, Gelsonís President.

The chain has 17 locations: Calabasas, Century City, Dana Point, Encino, Hollywood, Irvine, Marina del Rey, Newport Beach, Pacific Palisades, Pasadena, Santa Barbara, Sherman Oaks, Silver Lake/Los Feliz, Tarzana, Valley Village/NoHo, West Hollywood, and Westlake Village.

On its webite, Gelson's (headquartered in Encino) describes itself as providing "an extraordinary grocery shopping experience for discerning consumers" with "superior produce, highest quality meat, seafood and deli, an unmatched selection of wine and liquor, and exceptional service" .

UPDATE: Gelson's says its site at 2nd/PCH is an existing operating Albertsons whose lease is expiring in 2013. Albertsons [whom we contacted for confirmation] hasn't confirmed this (as of 5:00 p.m. Sept. 18).
