SUNDAY AM UPDATE: Port of LB Reports No Damages From Any Hurricane Norbert Surge Sat. Nite. SAT UPDATE: Port Says No Major Problems Fri Nite From Norbert, Which Reached Category 3 But Is Weakening Now

(Sept. 7, 2014, 8:50 a.m.) -- Port of LB reports no damages from any Hurricane surge on Saturday night (Sept. 6) or overnight.
(Sept. 6, 2014, 6:55 p.m.) -- The National Weather Service's National Hurricane Center indicates Hurricane Norbert reached Category 3 but is now weakening. At 2 p.m. PDT Sept 6, it issued an advisory indicaing that "The northern portion of the circulation is already reaching cooler waters and moving into a more stable environment. This should result in steady or even rapid weakening during the next 24 hours, with a slower rate of weakening thereafter as the circulation gradually spins down. Norbert is expected to become a remnant low over the cold waters just west of the northern Baja California peninsula in 3 days or so."

A surge is still expected but we've seen conflicting information on its expected arrival time in Long Beach. As indicated below, whatever surge does arrive may be affected by sizable p.m. high tides locally:

2014-09-06, 7:53 PM PDT, 6.51 feet High Tide
2014-09-07, 8:53 AM PDT, 5.34 feet High Tide
2014-09-07, 8:42 PM PDT, 6.62 feet High Tide
2014-09-08, 9:29 AM PDT, 5.72 feet High Tide

(Sept. 6, 2014, 7:35 a.m.) -- Port of LB spokesman Art Wong tells LBREPORT.com shortly after dawn today (Sept. 6) that the Port experienced no major problems Friday night from Hurricane Norbert. WeatherChannel.com says Norbert has intensified, reaching "Category 3" status as it moves north-northwest...but is expected to weaken as it reaches cooler waters (coverage here.)

At 2:40 a.m. Saturday (Sept. 6), the National Weather Service issued a "Coastal Hazard Message" indicating "high surf from a moderate long-period swell...will peak today [Sept.6] then linger through Monday..."

Last night's (Sept. 5) high tide in the 7:00 p.m. hour reached roughly 6.2 feet...and tonight's (Sept. 6) sizable high tide will be a bit higher at 6.51 feet at roughly 7:51 p.m.

As previously reported by LBREPORT.com, the Long Beach breakwater's middle section (between Angels Gate and Queens Gate facing the Ports) was damaged by Hurricane Marie and now has three breaches and five near-breaches. It's unclear at this point if a separate eastward breakwater section sustained damage in the Hurricane Marie surge [coverage here.]

The City of LB issued this advisory on Thursday:

A storm surge event with higher than normal water levels is expected to impact the Peninsula and Naples areas of Long Beach this weekend. The storm surge is being caused by Hurricane Norbert in the eastern Pacific Ocean, and is expected to impact southeast Long Beach from Friday afternoon through Monday morning.

City crews are preparing for the storm surge with a coordinated, multi-department response by fortifying sand berms on both the beach and bay sides of the Peninsula, installing plugs in the Naples sea wall to prevent flooding, deploying additional staff and equipment around the clock and closely monitoring the situation.

Residents are advised to avoid swimming in any dangerous waters, stay off sand berms and stay away from City vehicles and machinery operating along the coastline.

As they did during the storm surge last week, volunteers from Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) and the Long Beach Search and Rescue Explorer Program will make contact with residents to provide information that will assist them in planning for this event. Residents should take appropriate steps to be prepared by securing personal property and vehicles in areas that are prone to flooding.

Bins of sand and empty bags will be available Friday morning at Ocean Boulevard and 72nd Place, and also at Ocean Boulevard and Claremont Avenue. Residents must bring their own shovels and are limited to filling 10 bags.

More information is available at www.longbeach.gov/disasterpreparedness and www.longbeach.gov/fire/cert.
