Man Dies After Somehow Wedged/Trapped Under Blue Line Train, Pacific Ave./4th-5th St. Station; LBFD Uses Jaws of Life To Free Him, He's Transported To Hospital In Critical Condition And Doesn't Survive


(Sept. 12, 2014, 11:55 a.m.) -- The L.A. County Coroner's office has identified the man killed by a Blue Line train on Monday, Sept. 8 as Melvin Foster, Jr., 46, with his residence listed by the Coroner's office as "transient" (source: Coroner Lt. David Smith.)

Lt Smith says the Coroner's office has classified the death as accidental.

(Sept. 8, 2014) -- A man was killed today [circumstances not yet clear] after he somehow ended up partially or entirely [unclear] beneath a Metro Blue Line train at its station on Pacific Ave. at the 4th-5th St. station in downtown Long Beach.

The Long Beach Fire Department used its Jaws of Life and Urban Search/Rescue Team [crew has special expertise and equipment] to extricate the man who was trapped under the train. LBPD Firefighter-Paramedic/PIO Brian Fisk says the call came in at 12:15 p.m., six LBFD apparatuses responded; the extrication required about 20 minutes...and the man was transported to a hospital in critical condition. The L.A. County Corner's office indicates the man [an African-American man who appeared to be roughly in his 40's] did not survive [identification pending.]

LBFD PIO Fisk says the circumstances of how the man wound up in/around/under the Blue Line train weren't immediately clear.
