LBREPORT.com learned about the incident and inquired about it. LBFD Public Information Officer / Firefighter-Paramedic Brian Fisk says that on Sept. 22 at about 4:00 p.m., Engine 4 was completing a response to another incident when its crew spotted the elderly woman being attacked by a large dog in the 3700 block of E. 5th St. (Euclid/Grand area.)
Engine 4's crew (who happened to recognize the woman as a neighborhood resident) saw her defenseless and on her back as the dog attacked...and PIO Fisk says without hesitation, Engine 4 crewmembers jumped off the rig and aggressively engaged the attacking dog. PIO Fisk says their efforts saved the woman from further injury...or worse. She was transported as a trauma patient -- meaning with significant injuries -- to a hospital. One the firefighters was himself injured; he received a deep puncture wounds to his wrist and forearm and was transported to an area hospital for treatment. PIO Fisk says the injured woman is now reported in stable condition. The injured firefighter was treated and released. It sounds to us like the actions of Engine 4's firefighters -- acting without regard to their personal safety -- saved the woman's life. Long Beach Animal Care Services Manager Ted Stevens tells LBREPORT.com that the dog is registered as an Australian Shepherd/Chow Chow mix...and is owned by the woman it attacked. The dog is now under a 10 day home quarantine. Further as we learn it on LBREPORT.com.
