(Sept. 18, 2014, initial report) -- LBPD is in mourning today (Sept. 18) after news that an off-duty officer was killed yesterday (Sept. 17) in a single-vehicle accident on the northbound 710 freeway north of the Rosecrans Ave. onramp.A CHP release indicates the officer was 55 years old, lived in Alhambra, and was driving a 2014 Chevrolette Corvette. CHP says it was a single vehicle accident and occurred at about 7:22 p.m.
CHP's release states that witnesses indicate the vehicle was traveling in excess of 100 mph in the northbound #1 (left) lane north of Rosecrans Avenue when, for currently unknown reasons, the driver lost control, struck the center divider, and the vehicle traveled across all lanes, off the roadway, across to the Rosecrans onramp and overturned several times before coming to a rest on its rooftop.
