(Sept. 8, 2015, 5:55 p.m.) -- In a release, LBPD says the motive for the shooting is unknown.

(Sept. 8, 2015, 6:30 a.m.) -- A man was shot -- and killed -- in the 400 block of W. 5th St. (area Chestnut Ave.) last night (Labor Day Monday Sept. 7.)

It was LB's second shooting on Labor Day (an earlier non-fatal shooting was in NW North Long Beach) and is the eighth shooting (hit and no hit) in the 1st and 6th Council districts within the past three weeks, which includes a 1st district homicide.

LBPD overnight Watch Commander Lt. Mark Coble tells LBREPORT.com that at about 9:51 p.m. (Sept. 7), officers responded to reported gunfire in the 400 block of W. 5th St., found a man (adult) who'd been shot, who was transported by LBFD to a hospital in critical condition...and expired at the hospital.

As of predawn Sept. 8, there were no suspects in custody...and no indication in the 1 a.m. hour that the shooting was gang related although the circumstances were under investigation.

Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez was present alongside the area's immediate past 1st district Council representative/now Mayor Robert Garcia as the shopping area owner announced ambitious, privately funded plans to "repurpose, reposition and rename" the shopping area. About an hour after last night's Sept. 7 homicide, LBPD responded a few blocks north to the area of 11th St./Daisy Ave...where someone carrying a gun suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound when the weapon he was carrying accidentally discharged.

Later today (Sept. 8), the City Council is scheduled to meet to consider the City's FY16 budget. During an Aug. 18 budget hearing on the proposed LBPD budget, no Council members made any motions, or indicated any willingness to restore all of part of LBPD's former field anti-gang unit (cut in half in FY13, erased in FY14 and FY15 budgets), or any of roughly 200 officers erased in Mayor recommended/Council enacted budgets since 2009.

LBPD's former field anti-gang unit previously deployed 20 officers + 2 sergeants in gang impacted neighborhoods, where officers could observe conditions firsthand, work contacts and gather intelligence. LBPD still has a budgeted anti-gang unit (handling investigations, filing cases and the like) but not an anti-gang unit operating in the field as previously.
