The Sept. 1 shooting comes two weeks to the day after Councilmembers held a budget hearing on LBPD's budget; no Councilmembers made any motions, or indicate any willingnes to do so in coming weeks, to restore all of part of LBPD's former field anti-gang unit, or any of roughly 200 officers Mayor recommended/Council enacted budgets have erased since 2009.

Two days earlier on Aug. 28 -- roughly nine-tenths of a mile due west along 10th St., a man was shot and wounded in what appeared to be a "walk up" shooting in the area of 10th St./Virginia Court (between Magnolia and Chestnut Aves.) roughly a mile due north of City Hall in the historic Willmore City area (1st Council district.) It's being investigated as possibly gang related.
