Three Shootings Within Five Hours Within A Quarter Square Mile: 1000 block E. 10th; 600 block Cerritos; 700 block 8th St.; LBPD Says Its Gang Unit Is Investigating, Shootings Appear Unrelated

(Sept. 30, 2016) -- Long Beach had three shootings within five hours within a roughly quarter square mile area (roughly a half mile by a half mile) east/northeast of downtown on Thursday night Sept. 29. LBPD overnight Watch Commander Lt. Mark Coble tells LBREPORT.com:
At 5:50 p.m., a man (adult) was shot/wounded in the 1000 block of E. 10th St. (6th Council district); the suspects are outstanding;
At 9:15 p.m., two women (adults) were shot/wounded in the 600 block of Cerritos Ave. (2nd Council district).
At 10:38 p.m., a man was shot/wounded in the 700 block of E. 8th St. (1st Council district); the suspects are outstanding
Lt. Coble says the victims' wounds are believed to be non-life-threatening; the shootings are NOT believed to be related but are all being investigated by LBPD's gang unit.
The three Sept. 29 shootings come one day after a man was shot/wounded in the area of Anaheim St./Olive Ave. in the early evening on Sept. 28.

LBPD's gang unit continues to function, handling investigations, but LBPD's FIELD anti-gang unit (20 officers + 2 sergeants) no longer exists. The Council funded half of it for a year in FY13, then let it disappear entirely in budget votes in FY14, FY15 and FY16, was failed to restore it for by the Council's Sept. 13, 2016 FY17 budget approval, despite voter approval on June 7, 2016 of a sales tax increase to 10%.]
