(Sept. 23, 2016) -- LBREPORT.com readers reported (and a reader forwarded a photo to us, below, thank you) of what looked like piles of garbage on fire in northbound lanes of Bellflower Blvd. between Atherton St. and 7th St. (near entrance to CSULB.)
And yes...it was flaming garbage. LBFD Public Information Officer Capt. Mark Miller tells LBREPORT.com what caused this bizarre sight: [Scroll down for further below.] . |
LBFD PIO / Capt. Miller says that at about 11:20 a.m., the driver of a city refuse collection truck noticed something in the truck's load was on fire; the standard protocol is to deposit the problem load in the street and summon LBFD...which the refuse truck driver did. LBFD firefighters arrived and doused the flames. The reader comments: "When tbe officer gave me the go ahead. I drove and could feel the heat." PIO Miller says it's not that common but yes, this sort of thing has happened before and does occur from time to time. Someone may have put a smouldering item (speculation: a cigarette? something from the kitchen tossed away while too hot?) in a refuse container; it was collected...and combustion occurred.
