(Sept. 20, 2017, 11:55 a.m.) -- Shortly after 1 a.m., the City Council voted to create a series of City immigration-sanctuary policies to supplement statewide sanctuary measures approved in SB 54.
The Council item (full text here) Directs the City Manager, through the Office of Equity, to partner with local immigrant rights organizations, the Long Beach Sanctuary City Coalition, Centro Cha, California State University Long Beach, Long Beach City College, and Long Beach Unified School District, to write and present a local policy that expands on SB54 in 60 days. The vote was 7-1 (Mungo dissenting on grounds the measure should have first gone through the state legislation committee on which she's a member; Supernaw absent, having exited Council meeting prior to the item.)
