(Sept. 17, 2018, 7:20 p.m.) -- For now, it's listed officially as an "unexplained death" under investigation into what occurred in the 1 a.m. hour this morning (Sept. 17) in the 100 block of Santa Ana Ave. in Belmont Shore.

Here's the information LBPD released shortly before 5:30 p.m. today (Sept. 17.) We're reporting this as breaking and don't have further at this point.

[LBPD release text] On September 17, 2018, at approx. 1:20 a.m., officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Santa Ana Avenue regarding a male subject heard yelling and acting violently inside a residence.
Arriving officers observed a male subject who appeared to be alone inside his residence, yelling and breaking items, and with multiple lacerations on his body. The subject was bleeding profusely, possibly from cuts sustained while breaking out windows. Based on the officer's observations, they believed the subject was in an altered state and in need of medical assistance. Due to his erratic behavior and injuries sustained, officers requested Long Beach Fire Department paramedics respond to the scene to stand-by, ready to provide aide.
The suspect exited his residence and based on his continued erratic behavior, officers attempted to detain him. When the subject failed to comply with officers' orders, and began struggling with them, he was tased, and subsequently taken into custody. He then became unresponsive and paramedics immediately began life-saving measures. The subject was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The official cause of death, and the identity of the deceased, which is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, will be determined by the Los Angeles Coroner's Office.
As with any in custody death incidents, the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office responded to the scene and will be conducting an independent investigation.
