Sudden, Unexpected Passing

Dave Wodynski, Manager of City Hall Budget and Performance Management Bureau, Is Suddenly Stricken & Dies; UPDATED With Statement by Tom Modica On Family's Behalf, And Touching Photo

(July 25, 2010, updated) -- LBReport.com is saddened to report that Dave Wodynski, Manager of City Hall's Budget and Performance Management Bureau, was suddenly stricken over the weekend and has died. (Photo right from May 2010 City Council budget presentation)

Mr. Wodynski, age 40, recently welcomed a new child.

Mr. Wodynski was present at city management's FY11 budget presentation on Friday afternoon, July 23. He was seated across the table from us (screen save from video, right).

[Update, July 26] The following is a statement from Tom Modica, who is speaking on behalf of Dave Wodynski's family.

On July 24, 2010, David Wodynski passed away from sudden natural causes while enjoying a Saturday night with his family in the South Bay. Dave was 40 years old.

Dave was an amazing human being and his family and friends are deeply saddened and shocked by his passing. This is such a tragic situation and words cannot describe how much we will miss Dave in our lives. He was an incredible person who was unbelievably kind, generous and incredibly devoted to his family and his friends. He will always be loved and he will be deeply missed.

Dave is survived by his wife Michelle and daughter Sophia. [Photo below provided with Mr. Modica's statement] In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to a college fund for Sophia. Further information will be made available shortly, and you may call Tom Modica at (562) 570-5091 for more information.

[From July 25 report] We spoke with Mr. Wodynski many times by telephone, inevitably over some budget factoid we didn't understand. He graciously fielded our calls and clarified fiscal budgetspeak for us...and had even the most obscure budget numbers at hand (or knew exactly where to find them).

A City Hall bio says Mr. Wodynski was named Manager of the newly formed Budget and Performance Management Bureau in March 2007 (under City Manager Pat West). "From 2003 - 2007, Mr. Wodynski served as the City's Budget Management Officer, under former City Manager Jerry Miller, assisting in the development and implementation of Miller's Financial Strategic Plan that dealt with a $102 million structural deficit.

The bio indicates that Mr. Wodynski began his career with the Peace Corps, serving as a Volunteer in Tunisia from 1992 - 1994. On returning to the USA, Mr. Wodynski joined the International City/County Management Association's (ICMA) International Municipal Programs team, where he managed several municipal development programs in Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovakia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan from 1995 - 2000.

In 2002, following completion of his graduate studies, Mr. Wodynski served as a Public Finance Advisor with the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), providing budgeting and finance technical assistance to cantons and municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

He was a graduate of Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government where he received his Master's Degree in Public Administration in 2001. He earned his B.A. in History from the University of San Diego in 1992.
