(December 9, 2020, 5:10 a.m.) -- Neither Mayor Robert Garcia, nor any City Council incumbents present -- Mary Zendejas, Jeannine Pearce, Suzie Price, Daryl Supernaw, Stacy Mungo, Roberto Uranga, Al Austin, Rex Richardson -- moved to adjourn the Dec. 8-9 City Council meeting in memory of Tom Stout, co-founder of the Long Beach Taxpayers Association.

Mr. Stout, a 7th Council district resident and retired public school teacher, passed away Dec. 5 after battling an especially deadly form of cancer.

The Dec. 8-9 Council meeting ended in the 1 a.m. hour, in part because Mayor Garcia and Councilmembers consumed over two hours at the start of their meeting for ceremonies honoring two of their now-exiting colleagues: Jeannine Pearce (didn't seek a second term after 2018 Council censure) and Dee Andrews (voted out on Nov. 3 whose CD6 experiences among LB's highest number of shootings.) As a result, the Council didn't begin conducting Dec. 8 substantive public business until after 7:00 p.m.

Mr. Stout was an early advocate of Long Beach pension reform, whose Council testimony was repeatedly shrugged by Councils under Mayors Beverly O'Neill and Bob Foster. For over a decade, Mr. Stout waged an often lonely effort in support of LB taxpayers, frequently visible handing out homemade fliers outside LB businesses and at public meetings.
