(June 2, 2020) -- I grew up in the 60s in New Jersey and took part in many protests in that day and age. I attended many MLK protests and marches.

It seems unbelievable to me that LB's Mayor, Council and police were so unprepared. They seemed to have been prepared to protect city hall and south division but not the hundreds of stores that contribute to pay their salaries.

When did it become acceptable to have less than 800 police for a city of over 450,000?

When did it become acceptable to not think ahead and protect your citizens who invested their life savings in their LB businesses, even though the sales tax rate is among the highest in the nation?

The "powers that be" have decimated our law enforcement. The bottom line is that although the looters are the ones responsible for the looting, the Mayor, City Council, Police Chief and Police Union had sad enabling roles in the devastation. They have not restored police levels to support the density they have created Being unprepared with not enough law enforcement resources is not an excuse.

Showing up hours after the looting starts is not acceptable.

Not expecting looting and rioting is not acceptable. The Mayor knew that the looters were from out of town and were paid to wreak havoc on cities. Why did you not expect this? I saw the 1992 riots. Didn’t you?

History keeps repeating itself. Maybe you all need a history lesson. Maybe you need to stop thinking about the next office you will run for and start thinking about how you can do your job better.

How about fixing this? Cut your salaries so we can have more police. Cut salaries from the top down -- not from the bottom up. Don’t have layoffs of the bottom workers -- have layoffs of the top-heavy government that LB and all of California has. Stop raising taxes. Stop making the community pay for more police and then we don’t get more police.

When did you become better than those you are paid to protect?

The community has been locked up for 3 months, and then this. Long Beach is a beautiful City and you have single-handedly ruined it. How will you fix it?

Stop thinking like politicians and start thinking like people who care about their community. Stop asking for more and more volunteers when you are not doing your jobs well. The people of LB have big hearts and will help in any way they can. What about you? Will you roll up your sleeves and jump in or will you be like typical politicians and make speeches like Sunday night's (May 31) press conference? That was a huge nothing burger!!!
