by John Deats *

* Mr. Deats was a long-time member (100% attendance over 10 years) and for many years chair of the City of LB's now former Public Safety Advisory Commission. He says he has been "a responsible and law abiding shooter of firearms for nearly 75 years."

(June 28, 2020, 2:00 p.m.) -- As part of its announced investigation, the Long Beach Police Department should ask these four questions regarding what it describes as the accidental discharge of a gun carried by a retired LBPD Sergeant (LBREPORT.com coverage here.)

  • 1. Has there been or will there be a request for a very thorough "forward trace" by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms ("BATF")?

  • 2. Did the retired LBPD Sgt. request and receive his CA Retired Peace Officers Carry Permit?

  • 3. Was the weapon recovered at the scene of the described accidental discharge listed on the retired LBPD Sgt's CA Peace Orfficers Carry Permit?

  • 4. How many times and when was the last time the retired LBPD Sgt qualify with this particular firearm in retirement?

And yes, LBPD should share the answers with the public.
