(Sept. 16, 2020, 5:55 p.m.) -- I've long described this current ensemble of the Long Beach City Council as the only one in America that doesn't have one notable gadfly, doesn't have one pugnacious dissenter, doesn't have anyone with the courage to voice a harsh public opinion that doesn't align with the policies being set forth by Mayor Robert Garcia and his obliging, pension-motivated City Hall sycophants.

I mean, in the aftermath of the Memorial Day looting of Long Beach in which 231 businesses were violated, not one City Council member came out and loudly criticized Mr. Garcia for allegedly forcing the LB Police Department to stand down, or loudly criticized the LB police chief, Robert Luna, for meekly accepting such an order.

And, naturally, the City Council members -- the names of this enlightened, fiercely independent group are Mary Zendejas, Jeannine Pearce, Suzie Price, Daryl Supernaw, Stacy Mungo, Dee Andrews, Roberto Uranga, Al Austin and Rex Richardson -- recently by a 9-0 vote affirmed Mr. Garcia's requested budget that included stripping the already undermanned LB Police Department of 51 officers.

Is there any City Council in America that casts more unanimous votes than this stellar collection of politicians that should form a fraternal organization and call itself the Mystic Order Of Me-Too Thinkers?

Oops, I'm mistaken, the City Council actually had three people who didn't go along with six of their colleagues at Tuesday night's meeting who, of course, endorsed the latest litany of state ballot lunacies -- no-cash bail policy, allowing race to decide college admissions/city contracts, ad nauseam -- that, alas, I'm certain will be passed in the November election.

Of course, this vote had no meaningful substance, for if it did I'm sure the LB Council would have buckled as is its trademark and emerged with the usual 9-0 vote.

I've resided in Long Beach since 1972, and never do I recall a more malleable, more compliant, more submissive group than this one that certainly won't become a sacred part of Long Beach lore.

The Nine Worthies are nine historical, scriptural, legendary personages who symbolize the ideals of chivalry, and I became interested in this Middle Age bit of mythology when I was in Cologne, Germany, in March of 2011 covering a heavyweight title fight between Vitali Klitschko and Odalnier Solis.

I visited its Town Hall, and came across a magnificent carving entitled Nine Good Heroes, and I was informed it was a 13th century depiction of the Nine Worthies, whom I had never heard of before.

Perhaps one day a local sculpture can do a similar rendering of this historically weird 2020 Long Beach City Council and entitle it the Nine Unworthies. . .

  • Is it my imagination, or are more people getting shot and assaulted these days in Long Beach?

  • Is it my imagination, or are more people driving their cars at excessive speeds these days in Long Beach?. . .

  • Actually, I don't think I'm imagining anything. For sure, there were a lot more cops around in the bad old days when a lot more speeding tickets were meted out and when a lot more criminals were running sacred because there were over 200 more officers on the Long Beach police force -- there were approximately 950 -- and when public safety was a higher priority than it has been in the Robert Garcia Administration . . .

  • Good for Kawhi Leonard now that he can prematurely partake in his phony "load management" approach -- skipping games during the regular season and ripping off the ticket-buying public -- and not have to extend himself at all in the NBA's Western Conference finals or Finals. Nice early, restful vacation for a guy earning a mere $32,742.000 this year and has another $65 million due him during his next two seasons with the Clippers. . .

  • No political correctness in Magic Johnson's assessment of the Los Angeles Clippers downfall. "They choked against Houston in 2015 and choked against the Denver Nuggets," he said.

As bad as Leonard and Paul George were in their Game 7 disaster against Denver, I'm in total agreement with their coach, Doc Rivers, who said he did a lousy job. . .

  • I just don't understand it. I go to the nearby 24 Hour Fitness gym in Cypress and have a two-hour workout, and yet I'm not allowed to visit Jeff Cozart's Belmont Athletic Club in Long Beach because it is still under mandatory Gavin Newsom-inspired lockdown.

    Why? . . .

  • I just don't understand it. I take a nice sight-seeing ride down PCH last Saturday night to Newport Beach and have a wonderful dinner inside at a bayside restaurant called Louie's, yet I can't eat inside at restaurants in Long Beach.

    Why?

  • My pal the stockbroker wizard, Big Ben Goldberg, loves to tease me about such oddities. "C'mon down to Orange County and I'll even buy you a drink at Turk's or Pelican Isle where you're actually allowed to sit inside and enjoy your beverage," he says.

What a sport, since Ol' Ben knows I've sworn off booze, for at least the time being. . .

  • Caught up on the phone with the original Pine Avenue restaurant pioneer, John Morris, Wednesday afternoon, and, of all things, the operator of the Boathouse was riding a horse atop a mountain near Cody, Wyoming with friends Ron Williamson and Dave McNanny. "I've got to be at least at an 8,000 foot elevation -- and would you believe the haze from the California wildfires has drifted over to here," said Mr. Morris, whose outdoor business at the Boathouse has been booming, as are so many other restaurants in Long Beach.

  • Too bad they aren't allowed to have customers inside their restaurants, as they are across the border in Orange County. . .

  • I call a Long Beach gentleman named Jeff Yount Earth Man because his goal in life is to walk 24,901 miles, which happens to be the circumference of the Earth. He walks an average of 12 miles a day around Belmont Shores, Belmont Heights, Naples and other nearby areas---and is up to over 11,000 miles. "Figure to be at the half-way mark sometime after the first of the year," says the 63-year- old Earth Man.

    Why is he doing it?

"Had a stroke a while back and needed to lose weight," he says. "I've gone from over 270 pounds down to 193 and feel great," he says.

Earth Man has found the perfect dietary remedy. Just walk 12 miles daily!
