To Mystery Mayoral Candidate Greg Magnuson (Who In Tarnation Is He?)

(Aug 19, 2021, 8:40 p.m.) -- I grudgingly have to give the Third District's Councilwoman, Suzie Price, credit for being an inexhaustibly savvy politician.

I mean, even though she represents perhaps the only locality in Long Beach that tilts old line, she went right along with five of her far more progressive City Council colleagues and voted against the upcoming California gubernatorial recall election to throw Gavin Newsom out of office.

One brave soul, the Fourth District's Daryl Supernaw, was the lone dissenter, while the Seventh District's Roberto Uranga failed to make an appearance and the Fifth District's Stacy Mungo made an appearance only after the voting was consummated.

So why would Ms. Price be in favor of retaining Mr. Newsom, who has incurred the wrath of so many Californians on both sides of the political landscape for his disastrous homeless policies to his ruinous Covid-19 Pandemic business-restaurant lockdown policies to his tragic forest-fire enhancing environmental policies to his dangerous penal system policies in which thousands of inmates already have been liberated prematurely with a lot more on the way as in late April Mr. Newsom announced that 76,000 will be having their sentences drastically reduced?

You would think the latter development would give Ms. Price, who worked 20 years as a Deputy District Attorney in Orange County and is still active in the office, the heebie-jeebies since she knows first-hand about the high recidivism rate of criminals, especially those with lengthy records and violent backgrounds.

So what would possess the Machiavellian Ms. Price to so blithely also string along with her colleagues in approving the 2021 LB budget that included stripping 50 officers from the LB Police Department, paring it down to 760 when it once stood around 1,000?

It's become obvious to me---and a lot of other observers around town---that Ms. Price is taking the long view, and that long view is one day succeeding the Honorable Robert Garcia as mayor.

Mr. Garcia isn't expected to run again unless his supposed good friend, Vice-President Kamala Harris, fails to land him a slightly more prestigious post in the Biden Administration than the bizarre one he's been tendered --- trustee in the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation, which on a prestige level is roughly tantamount to being the president of the Rotary Club or secretary treasurer of the Kiwanis.

In a heavily Democratic city, Ms Price apparently doesn't want to offend her progressive constituents in case the mayoral opportunity comes up for her---and thus despite her jurisprudence background doesn't think Mr. Newsom should be unseated for his myriad controversial stands on, among too many others I haven't recited, law and order.

She figures losing a few disgruntled voters in her Third District will be well worth it and easily overcome by those in the other districts in Long Beach that keep electing outrageously incompetent City Council members who collectively are known in this column as the Nine Unworthies.

  • Why has the Long Beach United School District closed down all their playgrounds the past couple of years except during school hours?

Why on the weekends can't the general public---including taxpayers who subsidize the school system and thousands of kids---no longer use them?

If the LBUSD is so worried about vandalism and the like, then why not hire security guards to patrol the grounds on Saturday and Sunday to enable youngsters to enjoy the swings and slides and monkey bars and other recreational apparatus that was enjoyed on weekends in school yards by youngsters in Long Beach for more than 100 years?

And please, Board of Education members and their LBUSD, $345,000-a-year superintendent, Jill Baker, spare me with the money shortage claims.

I've seen first hand how many countless of million dollars have been squandered just on the Naples Elementary School---wish I had air-conditioned classrooms when I went to school near Fresno where it was a lot hotter than Long Beach---that has two basketball courts that remain unused throughout the summer. (it was always a poignant sight for me seeing parents playing with their kids on the courts)

But now the playgrounds have been shuttered unless school is in session---a sad, daily reminder of the mindless bureaucrats overseeing our governmental agencies. . .

  • One of my fondest memories as a kid was spending several summers with relatives in east Oakland, where my two older cousins, Freddie and Bobby Wickes, would take me over to nearby Hamilton Junior High School on 35th Avenue where the playground directors were a trio of Stanford basketball players, the Wagner twins, Ron and Hap, and Ron Tomsic, who would go on to play in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics on the gold-medal-winning USA team with Bill Russell and who still holds a couple of Stanford scoring records.

It was this experience---I also attended a couple of Oakland Oaks games of the old PCL in Emeryille---that got me hooked on sports that, alas, remains a dominant part of my life to this day. . .

  • Recent Wilson High graduate and valedictorian (4.67 GPA) Tommy O'Toole, a Guinness Book of World Records candidate, was driven by his parents, Big Mike & Sandra O'Toole, Thursday to San Diego State, which opens on Monday.

Mr. O'Toole late last spring consummated a historic one-day, 12-hour hat trick unmatched in the 200,000 years of humankind---a starting pitcher for the Wilson baseball team against Canyon High in the morning, a starting center for the Wilson basketball team against Servite in the afternoon and a Naples gondolier on four one-hour cruises in the evening. . .

  • It's become irritating to a lifelong San Francisco Giant aficionado to keep hearing the vast Dodger PR machine---from the ghastly homer Joe Davis to Orel Hershiser to every single sportscaster in town---reminding everybody every waking moment that the Dodgers are the defending world champions.

Yes, they are, but an asterisk should be affixed to such an achievement, since it came during a Pandemic-shortened, spectator-less, 60-game regular season, not comparable, say, to the world championships the Giants earned in 2010, 2012 and 2014 after completing grueling 162-game regular seasons. Just once, I want to hear someone in the local media or even a Dodger devotee snarkily point out this pertinent fact:

The Dodgers still haven't won a world title in a 162-game format since 1988.

Do I hear you Big Ben Goldberg?. . .

The Goldbergs at their favorite ball yard Dodger Stadium: Big Ben (left) and son Josh

  • Who is Greg Magnuson and why are some influential people around town touting him as a future LB mayoral candidate?. . .
