(Oct. 7, 2021, 6:35 p.m.) -- For the record and posterity, I want to reveal that I've been vaccinated this year for the flu and for Covid-19, the latter of which I received two Moderna shots in January and a booster one in August.

I did it on my own accord and the belief it could be beneficial to my health.

But, if I chose not to, I could have kept it to myself---even lied about such a choice---and nothing untoward would happen to me other than, well, my recent four-day visit to San Francisco would have been slightly altered because without proof of vaccination I wouldn't have been able to check into the Grand Hyatt, nor would I have been able to dine at Tadich Grill, Scoma's, Hunan Home's, Nopa and Sears.

In other words, it wouldn't have been practical for me to go to San Francisco if I didn't have vax documentation although I'm sure I could have found sleeping accommodations at a homeless shelter or curled up in a bedroll at Golden Gate Park and also could have found culinary goodies around Fishermen's Wharf from the many street vendors in the vicinity.

Yet, in 2021 America, land of the free, there are many millions of people who have shunned the Covid-19 vaccination for a variety of personal reasons, which is their private choice.

Yet, many of these people---teachers, professors, cops, firemen, professional athletes, etc., etc., etc., are under siege by these Draconian mandatory governmental Covid-19 edicts in which they face loss of jobs, even in some cases loss of pensions, if they don't acquiesce to these mandates.

And I think such a course is a scandalous intrusion on an American citizen's private rights.

I'm passionately in favor of the Covid-19 vaccination, but I'm also passionately in favor of those opposing it to retain their Constitutional freedoms.

I find it a discomforting feeling when those faceless souls with their own, in many cases, vacuous agendas are the ones instituting these ironclad rules that force too many to do what they don't want to do with the threat of losing their jobs hanging ominously over them.

I don't recall governmental mandates on the polio and flu and small pox shots being forced on the public across the decades---and those shots also have been instrumental in the prevention of the spread of deadly diseases.

What are the various governments in this country---the federal, the state, the county, the city---going to do next? Open up our borders and allow thousands, even millions, of undocumented foreigners to invade our country? Allow shop-lifting and looting to become a popular pastime for criminals without fear of penal reprisal? Wipe out zoning laws and allow four-family unit residences to be built throughout communities who overwhelmingly are against such insanity?

``We're becoming a Marxist state,'' says a close friend of mine who wants to remain anonymous because such an utterance would gain him pariah status among some co-workers and even close friends.

I'm not sure I'll go that far, although I will if the federal government ever begins snooping into the bank accounts of law-abiding American citizens.

Oops, I just had one of those dreaded senior moments, and momentarily forgot the Biden Administration has plans to do just that under the phony guise of catching IRS tax cheats. . .

  • The famed patriarch of the celebrated DiMarzo Clan of Long Beach, Don DiMarzo, passed away recently at 87. I always referred to him as The Don of the family that included his loyal wife Carmen, four sons and a daughter.

Don DiMarzo (l) at Joe Jost with owner Ken Buck

The Don was a congenial, fun-loving gentleman liked by everyone who knew him. He enjoyed outdoor activities like fishing and hunting and boating and was a long-time Los Angeles County Sheriff who earned several medals for valor.

His son, the legendary Mike (The Hammer) DiMarzo, a former LA County Sheriff himself, held a wake last Friday at Joe Jost as the owner, Ken Buck, a good friend of The Hammer and his father, reserved a table for 10 in a show of respect for Mr. DiMarzo. . .

  • Speaking of Joe Jost, one of its frequent visitors, Big Mike O'Toole of Naples Gondola Gateway and Naples Improvement Association renown, recently pulled off a historic saloon trifecta.

Incredibly, in a 24-hour period, this energetic fellow downed schooners of beer in three iconic establishments with similar cult followings---Grumpy's in Sun Valley Idaho, Blackie's in Newport Beach and, of course, Joe Jost in our fair city.

Big Mike O'Toole (center), adorn in a Grumpy's tee-shirt, is seated at Joe Jost flanked by guys wearing Blackie's and Jost apparel.

``I don't think any human being ever has pulled off such a feat,'' said Big Mike proudly.

Of course, I'm not sure any human being on the planet Earth is motivated to consummate such an astounding achievement except Big Mike, president-for-life of three entities---Naples Gondola Gateway, the NIA and the Belmont Mooring Company. . .

  • One of the beloved fixtures of Pine Avenue, Mr. James Brown, passed away the other day at 85. Mr. Brown, a native of Little Rock, Ark., who once participated in a Martin Luther King march, had a shoe shine stand in front of Terry Antonelli's L'Opera for more than 30 years.

I always dubbed him as the Hardest Working Man In The Shoe Shine Business in reference to another James Brown who was known as the Hardest Working Man In Show Business.

Mr. Brown cleaned the footwear of every prominent person in this town across the decades, from Whitey Littlefield to John Morris To Bob Foster to Roger Penske to Paul Newman to Al Unser to Parnelli Jones to Rich Archbold to Jim McCormack to Bernie (The Prince of Tabs) Selmanson to Dave Marshall to Willie McGinest to John Woolard to countless of cops and attorneys and downtown business people...

  • When Chris Taylor hit his walk-off, ninth-inning home run to give the Dodgers' their 3-1 Wild Card win over the St. Louis Cardinals Wednesday evening, it all but assured the shattering of the 107-win, fairytale-like season my beloved San Francisco Giants have been enjoying the past six months.

The Dodgers, even without their slugging first baseman Max Muncy, have too many talented batsmen, too many talented starting pitchers, too many talented relievers for the overachieving Giants in the best-of-five NL Division Series that opens Friday night in San Francisco.

If the Giants hadn't lost their 29-HR hitting first baseman Brandon Belt, I'd have given them a chance for the upset.

    But not now.

Alas, they figure to fall in four to the moneyed Dodgers who, with sound judgment and staggering financial enhancement, also figure to wind up defending their world title. . .

  • Shhh, let's keep this a secret from those in this town who savor blowing millions on the Queen Mary and artificial soccer fields, but I know how the city coffers can instantly be increased.

Just stick a couple of motorcycle cops near The Toledo and wait for the speeding cars rushing down from the Belmont Shore Bridge throughout the day. Hardly anyone pays attention to the speed limit in this stretch of Naples, and I see numerous cars every day driving between 50 and 70 miles an hours on it.

One does idly wonder if the beleaguered, hand-tied Long Beach cops are even allowed to give speeding motorists traffic ticket any longer. I can't recall the last time I saw a cop pull over one of these self-styled A.J. Foyts who have become such dangerous nuisances in these parts. . .

  • Kudos to the CEO/president of the Long Beach Grand Prix Association, Jim Michaelian, whose recent 46th edition of the Acura-sponsored Indy race drew around 180,000 spectators for the three-day spectacle.

``I've never seen a happier crowd in my life,'' said Mr. Michaelian, who can take a deserved bow for the successful event. ``I think a lot of people were just glad to see one another and glad to see Indy Cars racing again in person after more than a year's absence.''

Incidentally, Jim Michaelian said the Covid-19 restrictions imposed by the city---fans had to display proof of vaccination or a negative Covid-19 test---didn't turn out to be a major attendance impediment.

Kelly Colopy's Long Beach Health Department kindly set up free instant Covid-testing units at the four major entries to the race course---and only 10 positives showed up in 7,000 tests.

Good for the Long Beach Health Department!
