(Nov. 4, 2021) -- Todd Allen is the hardest working person in Long Beach.

``Yeah, I've been putting in at least 18 hours,'' says Mr. Allen matter of factly.

Who in tarnation is Todd Allen, and what's with his grueling schedule during a period in this country when so many choose to idle away their time living off government entitlements?

Well, Mr. Allen has been busy turning that large, long-empty eyesore of a building at 5470 East Second Street in Naples between Venetia and Siena into an international distribution center for Mercedes electric bikes as well as a walk-in outlet for customers interested in buying such battery-aided two-wheelers.

Todd Allen stands in front of what soon will be the Shujaa Electric Bike Company

He has been so busy the past two months that he and his girlfriend and partner in the enterprise, Monica Clark, have been residing in the back parking lot in an RV-style, 37-foot Cougar trailer.

During the day, Mr. Allen oversees the massive renovation of his 5,000-square-foot half of the structure that once housed a thriving sushi restaurant, as well as outlets selling rugs and bicycles.

``We're completely re-doing the place,'' he says. ``There's going to be three walls erected in this room, with different style bikes filling up each one. And on the second story, we're going to put in a nice lounge for customers to relax in when they come here to shop. It's going to be a nice first-class place.''

But also during the day, Mr. Allen is immersed in filling out orders for shipment of the upscale Mercedes bikes that are wrapped in cardboard and are on the floor of his establishment that is known as the Shujaa Electric Bike Company.

Todd Allen shows some of the upscale Mercedes he has been distributing around the country and the world and which soon will be sold at his establishment in Naples

``We send them out all over the country as well as the world,'' he says. ``Our phone never stops ringing. Gets really hectic around here. I start work at around 6 a.m., and close up shop here at 4 in the afternoon.'''

Lest, you think that's the conclusion of Mr. Allen's daily labors, forget it.

``I take a little break, eat an early dinner, and then I'm on the phone to Australia and other places until around 1 in the morning taking orders,'' he says. ``I'm totally drained when I go to bed. But I love what I'm doing. . .''

Australia is the venue where these upscale Mercedes bicycles---the $4,500 Formula E Team Silver Arrows, the $3,200 Formula E Team Black Bike, the $1,990 Formula E City Formula Bike and other lower-priced models---are manufactured.

Todd Allen grew up in Baldwin Park, attended the local high school where he played football, got married, had three daughters and wound becoming heavily involved in battery-operated devices since he long had worked in the low voltage and fiber optics industries.

A real estate friend, Carl Ocha, touted him on the vacant building in Naples, and a deal soon was struck with its owner, Ali Homayouni.

When is Shujaa Electric Bike Company going to open?

``Our target date is Black Friday, November 26,'' he says. ``We'll definitely be open by then.''

Todd Allen revealed that the Mercedes people are strongly interested in opening a Formula 1-themed restaurant on the other side of the building, which still is unoccupied.

But, blessedly for his health and sanity, Mr. Allen doesn't plan to run it.

``I have enough to do in the bicycle business without also being actively involved in the restaurant business,'' he says with a laugh...

  • Why would anyone be upset for that paid holiday Tuesday that was orchestrated by our thrifty, cost-conscious city leaders like our most Honorable Mayor, Robert Garcia, who employs only 8 people in his administration, or City Manager Tom Modica, who I'm sure rivals Todd Allen in daily working hours (if you believe that one, I'm sure you're fully invested in the sanctity of the Good Tooth Fairy)?...

  • The Phil Trani Golf Tournament, not to be confused with the Phil Trani Gym, or the Phil Trani Restaurant, or the Phil Trani Linguini & Clam Club, recently raised more $190,000 in Long Beach Boys & Girls Club donations.

Phil Trani, at far left, surrounded by volunteer supporters at his recent charity golf tournament that raised a record $190,000

``For me, the Phil Trani Golf Tournament is bigger than the Masters, the US Open and the PGA all put together,'' says Mr. Don Rodriguez, famed panjandrum of the LB Boys & Girls Club whose nuanced statements seldom reach such hyperbolic heights...

  • One of Long Beach's good guys, 79-year-old Ronald Eomurian, a passionate aficionado of athletics and an inveterate reader of books, has since his retirement from a successful sales career been a beloved part-time employee for the Long Beach Public Library.

He and his wife of 58 years, the former Nancy Gleason, both graduated from Jordan High and have two children, a daughter, Julie Crawford, married with two kids and living in Cameron Park near Sacramento, and Mark, also married and whose wife Michelle is Chief of Staff for Cal State University Chancellor Joe Castro.

    flanked by Mark and Julie

The elder Eomurian recently had to take time off from his library chores when he was diagnosed with cancer, and is now undergoing chemotherapy.

``Knowing my dad as I do and knowing his strong spirit and bright outlook on life, I'm sure he'll be back among his prized book at the library in the very near future,'' says Mark Eomurian. . .

  • The World Series match up between the Houston Astros and Atlanta Braves turned out to be a rooting dichotomy for so many people in that they would have liked to see the deserving and personable Astros' manager Dusty Baker finally win his first World Series title while they also would have liked to see the sign-stealing cheating Astros of the 2017 season lose.

Well, poor Dusty still is without a WS title that would have secured his managerial legacy and a certain spot in the Hall of Fame while the Braves proved that their stunning upset of the Dodgers in the NLCS was no fluke. . .

  • My ears still are ringing from the shrieking noise I endured throughout the LA Chargers-New England Patriot proceedings last Sunday in my first visit at SoFi Stadium.

Even though I was ensconced with the Blonde Sheriff in the broadcast suite of Sports USA Radio's fabled NFL announcer, Larry Kahn, I could barely hear her speak even though she sat next to me.

I thought I left the disco-techno scene long ago, but, good grief, such blaring sounds and DJ-type shriekers pumping up the fans during intervals in the action on the massive digital scoreboard that encircles the sprawling edifice that makes the Coliseum and Rose Bowl as antiquated as the Colosseum in Rome that has been around since 80 AD.

And I swear there are more bars in the joint---and large ones, at that---than you would find on Bourbon Street in New Orleans. . .

  • Twelve days and frantically counting for a six-week jaunt to Europe where I will enrich the culture in Krakow and Copenhagen and Hamburg and Berlin and Munich and Florence and Milan and Montreux and Paris and a few obscure places in between. . .
