(April 25, 2021) -- (April 26, 2021, 5:25 a.m.) -- The Signal Hill Police Department has been tight-lipped for 12 hours (and counting) over a shooting in roughly the 5 p.m. hour April 25 in the area of Cherry Ave./20th St.

Efforts by LBREPORT.com (now in our 21st year as an independent news outlet) to learn if the victim is alive or dead, their gender and basic circumstances of the shooting (multiple calls by us on April 25) have been met with delays culminating in an information blackout until hours from now (if then.)

SHPD's dispatch initially informed us that officers were still in the field (which we understand and respect.) We called back every few hours or so and eventually SHPD dispatch said they'd relay our contact information to the Watch Commander (which would be fine and we provided our info.) We then heard nothing, and at about 1 a.m. we called again amd were told the Watch Commander was instructed to refer all media inquries to a Sergeant/Detective who'd be handling all media inquires after office hours begin.

"When a police agency shrugs the public's right to know, they're not insulting us; they're disrespecting you, our readers," commented LBREPORT.com publisher Bill Pearl.

If/when SHPD provides informatiom on the shooting, we'll update our story accordingly. .
