(April 3, 2021, 7:15 a.m.) -- LBPD says its officers tried to de-escalate but ultimately fatally shot an alleged gun-wielding woman in the 2800 block of Goldejn Ave...after which officers discovered a man she shared a home with dead inside their residence.
LBPD says three officers were involved in the shooting and had activated their body-worn cameras which captured what took place. (Under 2018 Sacramento-enacted SB 1421 and AB 748, LBPD is required to (and after its investigation routinely does) release video evidence of officer-involved shootings.) In an April 2, release, LBPD states: On April 2, 2021 at approximately 5:15 a.m., officers and the Long Beach Fire Department simultaneously responded to the 2800 block of Golden Avenue after a 9-1-1 call about a man who appeared to have had a heart attack and also a woman threatening suicide. |

Failing to restore funding for the field anti-gang unit takes place in the context of the Mayor/Council's defunding of additional police officers (Sept. 2020 Council budget vote, 9-0) that LB taxpayers previously had. The net result (including the 2009-2015 defunding of roughly 200 officers) has left LB with a thin per capita police level of roughly 1.5 officers per thousand residents.) By comparison, L.A and Santa Monica budget roughly 2.43 and 2.49 officers per thousand residents respectively (not including LA Airport/Port police.) Signal Hill, surrounded by Long Beach, budgets roughly 3.15 sworn officers per thousand residents for its taxpayers.
