Aug. 11: Double Shooting, area LB Blvd and 55th St., 20 Yr. Old Man Murdered; 17 Yr. Old Shot But Will Survive

(August 12, 2002) -- A 20-year old LB resident was fatally shot, and a 17 year old LB resident suffered gun shot wounds to the head, on Sunday night, August 11 in the area of LB Blvd. and 55th St. in the 8th Council district.

LBPD says it responded at roughly 9:40 p.m. regarding a shooting and found Jose Arturo Fernandez of LB, and a second victim in an alley, both with gunshot wounds to the head.

LBFD Paramedics transported both victims to a local hospital. Mr. Fernandez died of his wounds this morning.

Police say their preliminary investigation indicates several subjects approached at least one of the victims in the alley before opening fire and then fled on foot. LBPD says the motive is presently unknown but may be gang related.

Police ask anyone with information about this crime to contact LBPD Homicide Detectives Steven Smith or Hector Nieves at (562) 570-7244.
