UPDATE from Livable California On Nine Bad Housing Bills
Two bad bills -- AB 1279 (opposed by City of LB) and AB 3107 -- are now dead (a victory, pulled by their author.)
On Aug. 6 three other bad bills were approved by the State Senate Housing Committee: AB 725, AB 2345 (lets developers override city standards on height, open space, parking, setbacks, side yards and other careful planning) and AB 3040 (lets cities "upzone" single-family areas to fourplexes)
On Aug. 11, SB 1120 (co-authored by state Senator Lena Gonzalez, it would crush single-family zoning, allowing 4 market-rate homes where a one home now stands) and SB 902 will be heard in the Ass'y Local Gov't Committee. SB 902 lets city councils toss out voter-approved protection of lands.
SB 1085, SB 995 remain problematic.

(August 9, 2020, 5:50 a.m.) -- Gunfire flew and a male juvenile was shot/wounded in the heart of Long Beach's "Pike" commercial area in the midnight hour today (Sunday Aug. 9)

LBPD overnight Watch Commander Lt. Shaleana Benson tells LBREPORY.com (preliminary information) that officers responded at about 12:41 a.m. to the 200 block of Bay St. to a reported shooting, found a male juvenile had been struck/wounded and located a crime scene in the area of Cedar Ave. and Seaside Way.

Lt. Benson says video from a nearby location has been viewed and suggests a white four door vehicle may be involved...and adds that the victim wasn't cooperating in the investigation. LBPD gang detectives have responded and the investigation is continuing.

The district's Councilwoman, Jeannine Pearce, is among LB Council incumbents who unanimously approed budgets recommended by Mayor Robert Garica that (despite LB voter approval of a 2016 Measure A sales tax increase) failed to restore funding for LBPD's field anti-gang unit.

On Aug. 3, Mayor Garcia recommended that the Council approve a FY 21 budget that defunds 54 Long Beach sworn police officers. replacing 34 with civilians and eliminatig 20 others would be eliminated outright.

A 2009-2015 defunding erased roughly 20% of LB's police level and left L.A. County's second largest city with a per capita police lebel significantly thinner than Los Angeles, Santa Monica and Signal Hill.

The FY 21 police level recommended by Mayor Garcia would further reduce LB's police level (which approached roughly 2.0 officers per thosand residents in 2008) from about 1.6 officers per thousand residents now to below 1.5 officers per thousand.
