(Aug. 21, 2020, 5:35 a.m.) -- At its August 19 meeting, no member(s) of LBUSD's elected School Board made a motion or otherwise directed LBUSD staff to tweak/amend/modify a tentative agreement (MOU) between LBUSD and the Teachers Ass'n of LB (TALB) to provide the same flexibility to pre-school gen'l ed and special-ed teachers and support workers to teach from home/remote locations as provided to other TALB-represented teachers.

Multiple community members, testifying via emails and in person, cited health and safety concerns for students and families. Parents weren't at the bargaining table; the MOU is between LBUSD management and the LB teachers union. The elected School Board was the voice that parents had that could have directed a different outcome. It didn't.

The resulting MOUs, ratified by TALB members, and related materials are now online and can be viewed here (source: TALB website).

Nearing the end of their meeting, School Boardmembers offered comments on various issues. None explicitly referenced the MOU. Some used vague verbiage seemingly pertinent to the MOU without saying so. Some focused on other issues. Dr. Juan Benitez: "Be patient as this information goes out. There's a lot of stuff that needs to be done to maintain the health and safety of students and staff but also provide high quality instruction. So with more information to come out, I would just ask our community members to wait as we roll out more detailed plans and more information and thank them for their patience..."

Dr. Felton Williams: ...I'm always proud of this district putting its best foot forwarded to make sure that our students are taken care of, our staff, our teachers..."

Megan Kerr: I want to thank staff for all of the hard work that you have put in..."

Jon Meyer: [Cites advice by Aldous Huxley to newly-elected President John F, Kennedy] "'Try to be a little kinder.' I think that's good advice for us all."

Diana Craighead (Board president): "I thought I would share this quote from Mr. Rogers: 'In times of stress, the best thing we can do for each other is to listen with our ears and our hearts, and to be assured that our questions are just as important as our answers.' Now we can adjourn.."
