(Aug. 12, 2021, 8:45 a.m.) -- While most of LB slept, Long Beach police faced and defused a very dangerous sitution.

Responding at roughly 2 a.m. to a shots call in the area of 4th/Orange, officers encountered an individual that Watch Commander Lt. Brandon Deis described as non-compliant...who allegedly shot a firearm toward officers and then fled the scene.

Lt. Deis says officers set up a containment, negotiated with the suspect and SWAT ultimately took him into custody (with injuries to the suspect described as minor.).

No officers or citizens were struck by gunfire.

On Aug. 10, over two dozen supporters of a self-described "Peoples Budget" told the City Council that police don't prevent crime and don't deter violence but cause it and (despite LB's per capita police level signficantly thinner than LA, Santa Monica and Signal Hill) demanded that the Council defund LBPD's budget by 25%.
