News Great View Expected (Weather Permitting) Shortly After Sunset As Space Station Will Pass Nearly Directly Over LB & L.A.

(Dec. 9, 2008) -- Long Beach and Los Angeles should get a terrific view (weather permitting) of the International Space Station today (Tues. Dec. 9) as it passes almost directly overhead from about 5:21 p.m. to 5:27 p.m.

NASA.gov and Heavens-above.com indicate the Space Station should first appear in the northwest sky (about 10 degrees above the horizon) at about 5:21 p.m. It will then travel upward in the sky to a roughly 77 degree elevation in LB (closer to 80 degree elevation in L.A.). [90 degree elevation would be directly above.]
After reaching its highest point, the spacecraft will travel downward toward the southeast, eventually disappearing about 10 degrees above the horizon at about 5:27 p.m.

And it should be bright...brighter than the brightest star.
If it's cloudy, all bets are off...but if it's clear, it should provide a teachable moment for kids and an enjoyable, free pause for adults.
