(December 19, 2019, 3:10 p.m.) -- A man was shot/wounded in the noon-hour today (Dec. 19) along busy E. Anaheim St. in LB's Cambodia Town, at MacArthur Park (6th Council district).

It's the third shooting since Dec. 1 in LB;s 6th Council district (Vice Mayor/Councilman Dee Andrews) (two shootings on Dec. 1: 1800 block Cedar and area of 25th/Pasadena Ave.)

In preliminary information, LBPD Public Information Officer Arantxa Chavarria tells LBREPORT.com that at about 12:10 p.m. today (Dec. 19), officers responded to a reported shooting in the 1300 block of E. Anaheim St. and found a man (adult) with a gunshot wound. LBFD transported the shooting victim to a hospital with what are described as "non-life-threatening" gunshot wounds.

PIO Chavarria says the suspects are three men (adults); they're currently at large and a motive for the shooting isn't currently known. LBPD gang detectives have responded (now stnadard LBPD protocol with non-fatal shootings.)

As previously reported by LBREPORT.com, from Nov. 1 through Dec. 1 LB's 6th and adjacent 1st districts combined had a per capita shooting rate approaching that of Chicago.

Council incumbent Andrews (first elected in 2007) is seeking re-election in March 2020; his ballot challengers are Suely Saro, Ana Arce and Sharifah Hardie (who spent sums to print their candidate statements in the voter pamphlet sent to all registered voters) plus two candidates whose names will appear on the ballot but didn't spent sums to print their candidate statements (Craig Ursuy and Josephine Villasenor) If no candidate receives 50%+1 of the votes in March, the top two proceed to a November 2020 runoff.

As with recently elected 1st dist. Councilwoman Mary Zendejas, Vice Mayor Andrews is endorsed by the LB Police Officers Ass'n PAC and Mayor Robert Garcia.

However challenger Saro is endorsed by the L.A. County Democratic Party, by the politically progressive LB "Our Revolution Long Beach" membership and by former 1st dist. Councilwoman Lena Gonzalez. Ms. Saro was an aide to former state Senator Ricardo Lara, whose November 2018 election as CA Insurance Commission created the state Senate seat vacancy that Gonzalez filled in 2019 with the endorsements of Lara, Garcia and the LBPOA PAC.

Andrews, chosen by his Council colleagues as their Vice Mayor (2018-2020), was first elected in 2007, and relected in 2008, 2012 and 2016, the latter by write-in. However Andrews' won't have to wage a write-in campaign in March; his name will be printed on the ballot, a change in LB law created by Charter Amendment BBB, advanced by Mayor Robert Garcia and City Auditor Laura Doud, that lets incumbents seek third terms without a write-in requirement. BBB included a provision letting Andrews avoid counting his current 2016-2020 term (won with the write-in) as one of the three terms.
