(December 9, 2019) -- Voters in City Council districts 6 and 8 now know their choices in March 2020 Council elections...and voters in district 4 will have no ballot listed choice in March 2020.
In Council districts 6 and 8, incumbents Dee Andrews and Al Austin will have their printed names on the ballot, avoiding LB's previous term-limit/write-in requirements under a Charter Amendment that they voted to put on a special November 2018 citywide ballot. In district 4, incumbent Daryl Supernaw (whose votes on many [although not all] Mayor/management favored policies differed little from other incumbents)) avoided any ballot challenger; he will be re-elected without an election. (The same result occurred in the 2018 election cycle in Council district 1 when no candidate(s) challenged incumbent Lena Gonzalez.). . In LB's 6th district (Central LB/south Wrigley), Andrews will face Suely Saro, Ana Arce and Sharifah Hardie. All three spent sums to have their candidate statements printed in the voter pamphlet sent to all registered voters. Two other candidates will have their names printed on the ballot (Craig Ursuy and Josephine Villasenor) but didn't spend sums to have their candidate statements printed. In the 8th district -- incumbent Al Austin will face two challengers: Juan Ovalle (part of LB's Reform Ticket, pledging changes in multiple Council-enabled City Hall practices) and Tunua Thrash-Ntuk (spouse of LBCC Trustee Uduak-Joe Ntuk, a political ally of 9th dist. Councilman Rex Richardson) who amassed a $200,000+ campaign warchest in the first half of 2019 aided by her L.A. corporate/banking contacts and parts of organized labor. Austin has a long history of supporting organized labor, currently works for a public employee union but angered some in organized labor with a hotel-worker related vote. . In the 2nd district, state law extends the filing deadline to Dec. 11 since incumbent Jeannine Pearce isn't seeking re-election. As of Dec. 9, five candidates had qualified for the ballotL Robert Fox (part of LB's Reform Ticket); Cindy Allen (endorsed by Mayor Robert Garcia and his allies), Eduardo Lara (endorsed by incumbent Pearce), Nigel Lifsey and Ryan Lum...and the City Clerk lists Jeanette Barrrera as "pending" (apparently due to some fees in the process of being paid); Two other candidates who pulled papers haven't yet submitted qualifying nomination signatures (and have until Dec. 11 to do so.)
