(December 23, 2019, 6:20 a.m.) -- Long Beach got clobbered with 1.18" of rain in a six hour period between 9:53 p.m. Sunday (Dec. 22) and 3:53 a.m. Monday (Dec. 23), in some cases at rates of roughly a quarter to a third of an inch of rain per hour.
In one 16 minute period between 2:53 and 3:09 a.m., 0.24" fell. That rate (amounting to nearly an inch an hour) could have turned very serious if it had continued. It didn't, but another 0.14" fell up to 3:53 a.m., brining the hour's total to 0.38" before things calmed down...for now. The National Weather Service extended a "flood advisory" (first issued at 11:54 p.m.) until 9:00 a.m. Monday (Dec. 23), stating in pertinent part, "The rain will cause widespread ponding of water on area roadways and local flooding of low lying areas and intersections early this morning." And we're not done yet. For today (Monday Dec. 23) the Nat'l Weather Service forecasts "showers, with thunderstorms also possible after 10am. Some of the storms could produce small hail...Chance of precipitation is 100%" and tonight "A chance of showers and thunderstorms before 10pm, then a chance of showers between 10pm and 4am. Some of the storms could produce small hail...Chance of precipitation is 40%."
