Coastal Comm'n staff announces POSTPONEMENT of Dec. 10 hearing on proposed Belmont Beach Aquatics Center.

We'll update you when new hearing is scheduled. We’re a group of residents opposed to City Hall building the project just north of beach sand in SE LB because of future sea-level rise (the beach site is expected to flood in 30-50 years), the cost ($82 million, from Tidelands Funds) and the fact that there’s already an existing outdoor pool at this site installed 5 years ago when the old Belmont Pool was demolished in 2015. There are places in Long Beach with a greater need for recreation and sports facilities

The entire City of Long Beach has only 3 public pools. Long Beach needs more community pools, but not on the beach. This pool should be built in a neighborhood where more Long Beach residents can easily reach it to enjoy the benefits of swimming and recreation.

Paid for by Long Beach residents who think there’s a better place in Long Beach for a public pool. Contact us: ABetterPlaceForAPool@gmail.com

(UPDATED December 13, 2020, 2:30 p.m. from Dec. 12, 8:55 a.m,) -- Now it's LB's latest homicide. A 21 year old man shot in the head in the area of CD 1's Drake Park on Friday Dec. 11 has died. In a release, LBPD states:

[LBPD release text]...[Upon arrival at the shooting crime scene] officers located a male adult victim laying on a walkway leading up to a residence in the 900 block of Loma Vista Drive suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso.

Officers rendered medical aid until the arrival of the Long Beach Fire Department, who transported the victim to a local hospital. On Dec. 13, 2020, detectives were informed that the victim succumbed to his injures at the hospital on Dec. 12, 2020. The victim has been identified as 21-year-old Miguel Reyes, a resident of Long Beach.

Based on the preliminary investigation, the victim was with a female adult and were getting items out of their vehicle when they were confronted by a group of suspects who began shooting at them. The female victim was not injured. The motive for the shooting is believed to be gang-related.

The suspects are described as male adults and fled the scene on foot.

Less than four hours before the fatal shooting, a man was shot/wounded on Dec. 12 in the area of Anaheim St./Chestnut Ave at the northern edge of the Willmore City hisotirc neighbood (a few blocks north of Drake Park.)

On December 3, 2020, a man was shot/wounded in Drake Park.

  • >On Feb. 4, 2020, a 16 year old boy was shot/wounded in the 900 block of Maine Ave.

  • Two days earlier on Feb. 2, 2020, a 20 year old man and a 16-year old girl were shot/wounded in the 900 block of Park Circle (and said the suspects tried to rob them.)

Since June 2, 2020, residents of LB's mainly working class 1st Council district have experienced the highest number of shootings (total wounding + fatal + casings found/vehicles-buildings hit) of any LB Council district. Since early December 2020, CD 1 has been represented by Councilwoman Mary Zendejas, elected with the support the LB Police Officers union political action committee (LBPOA PAC), Mayor Robert Garcia and immediate past CD1 Councilwoman (now state Senator) Lena Gonzalez.

  • In Sept. 2020, Councilwoman Zendejas joined a unanimous City Council in voting for a FY21 budget that defunds nearly 50 officers on top of roughly 180+ officers defunded by Councils in budgets from 2009-2014 (supported by then-1st district Councilman Robert Garcia.) Among officers not restored for LB taxpayers is LBPD's former 22-member field anti-gang unit (details here.)

In 2013, then Vice Mayor Robert Garcia (preparing to run for Mayor) used roughly $27,000 from CD 1's infrastructure funds to put six cameras in areas viewing Drake Park but since becoming Mayor hasn't recommended budgets restoring more than 22 out of 208 officers he voted to erase (including the field anti-gang unit) in previous budgets. When Garcia ran for Mayor in 2014, he supported electing his CD1 field rep Gonzalez to succeed him.

In the 2019 non-runoff special election to fill the vacancy created as Gonzalez advanced to Sacramento, the LBPOA PAC, Garcia and Gonzalez gave $10,000 each -- exceeding allowable contributions to candidate campaigns -- by giving the sums instead to the LB Firefighters Ass'n which then used the sums to run an "independent" (non candidate run) campaign supporting Zendejas. [LBREPORT.com labeled the maneuver our 2019 "Outrage of the Year."]

LBREPORT,.com has separately learned that state Senator Gonzalez has since moved out of CD1 and into ELB's affluent 5th Council district.
