Perspective

Although Councilman Richardson is the choice of five Council incumbens, it will be LB voters' choice whether this will help him -- or hurt him -- if as speculated he pursues a Mayoral vacancy if incumbent Robert Garcia takes a speculated Biden or Newsom appointment.

But ask yourself: would YOU or your neighbors be more likely to vote to elect Richardson LB's next Mayor if he's listed on the ballot as its current "Vice Mayor"? The conventional rule that this benefits a candidate may not hold true given the level of discontent we sense on the current Long Beach Council on multiple items.

Councilman Richardson is velcro'd to those votes. He'll only be held accoauntable if a Reform-minded Mayoral candidate surfaces. Not just a candidate speaking for special interests but a candidate clearly committed to reforming City Hall's actions. Someone unafraid to cite Mayor Garcia's record of taxpayer unfriendly and contribution-propelled incumbent-perpetuating actions.

Councilman (now Vice Mayor) Richardson mainly voted with his Council colleagues to enable those actions without dissent..

History shows how little the "Vice Mayor" title meant to the advancement of Vice Mayors Dan Baker, Doug Drummond, Jeff Kellogg and (recent failed re-election of) Dee Andrews.

On Dec. 15, newly elected CD 2 rep. Cindy Allen provided the swing vote to name Rex Richardson the Council's Vice Mayor.

Elections matter.
