Suja Lowenthal Dropping Out of School Board Race To Seek 2d district Council Seat

(Feb. 25, 2006, initial post) -- LB School Board president Suja Lowenthal, daughter-in-law to Councilwoman Bonnie Lowenthal and state Senator Alan Lowenthal, has indicated she's dropping out of the LB School Board race just weeks before the election to seek the 2d district Council seat vacated earlier this month by Dan Baker.
Lowenthal's decision, which comes too late to remove her name from the School Board ballot, leaves her central city School District constituents with one other listed ballot choice: an individual Lowenthal said on Feb. 8 "appears to be a roving candidate, moving from place to place, looking for any office in which he could run."
In a statement emailed to LBReport.com in response to a LB court striking verbiage from her School Board opponent's candidate ballot statement, Lowenthal added, "It is heartening that a court of law today identified his rhetoric as false, and disallowed it. It is my hope that the public will view any campaign material he subsequently disseminates with the same degree of skepticism as that applied by the court..."
In her official ballot statement seeking reelection to the LB Board of Education, Lowenthal told voters in salient part:

Re-elect School Board President Dr. Suja Lowenthal.
Dr. Lowenthal will use her experience and ability to continue to serve our schools...
...Dr. Lowenthal is committed to continuing to improve our award-winning schools and ensuring that our children remain the focus.
That's why Dr. Lowenthal is endorsed for re-election by every current School Board member, local firefighters and police officers, California Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O'Connell, Congresswoman Juanita Millender-McDonald, State Senator Alan Lowenthal, Mayor Beverly O'Neill, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and Councilmember Dan Baker...
As of the end of the business day Feb. 24, the LB City Clerk's office indicated only LB neighborhood advocate Bry Myown and cable TV host Sonny Bozeman had filed papers indicating their intentions to seek the 2d district Council seat.
Lowenthal's decision, reported in the Feb. 25 Press-Telegram, comes one day after Ms. Myown announced her 2d district Council run with a number of endorsements including 8th district Councilwoman Rae Gabelich.
Overnight, LBReport.com emailed Lowenthal inviting her to provide a statement on the reasons for her decision. We'll post it as received. Revisit this page, click reload or refresh on your browser for updated text.
