Within Roughly Four Hours, Long Beach Had FIVE Shootings: A NLB Homicide (NOT Believed Gang Related) Plus Two Shootings With Men Hit (6th dist, 9th dist) Described As "Uncooperative" With Investigation At Hospitals Plus Two Shootings With No-Persons-Hit (1st dist, 2nd dist.)

(Feb 24, 2019, 11:45 a.m., updated 5:27 p.m.) -- Within a roughly four hour period (between 11:24 p.m. Sat. Feb 23 and 3:14 a.m. Sun Feb. 24), Long Beach PD responded to FIVE shootings (one of them fatal.)

LBPD says the homicide (inside an apartment in the 1500 block Artesia Blvd/9th dist.) is NOT believed gang related.

Two shootings wounded men (adults) described by LBPD as "uncooperative" with its investigation at hospitals. Two other shootings (one in 1st dist., another in 2nd dist.) left no person(s) hit. The motives for the non-fatal shootings are undetermined at present.

Informaton is preliminary via LBPD PIO Detective Jennifer Arzola:

  • Homicide: February 24, 2019, 12:37 a.m.: LBPD officers called to a possible shooting in the 1500 block of Artesia Blvd., detained a man (adult) suspect at the scene and found a man (adult) victim inside an apartment. Officers rendered aid to the victim until LBFD responded and determined the victim deceased; Homicide detectives responded and the shooting isn't believed gang related at this time; LBPD's investigation is ongoing.

    UPDATE: In a release, LBPD says Zaire El, 23, of Long Beach was taken into custody/booked on suspicion of murder and an outstanding traffic warrant and held on $2,000,619 bail. "The preliminary investigation suggests the victim and suspect were cohabitants in the apartment...A motive for the shooting is unknown and the investigation remains ongoing. [end UPDATE]

  • Hit Shooting, 2:16 a.m., 2000 block MLK (6th dist.) Man (adult) sitting on his front porch is hit, transports himself to a hospital, described by PD as uncooperative during its investigation, no description of suspect or suspects, motive officially unknown, investigation ongoing.

  • Hit shooting, 2:55 a.m., 6300 block Atlantic (9th dist.): Man (adult) is hit, transports himself to a hospital, described by PD as uncooperative in its investigation, no description of suspect or suspects; motive officially unknown, investigation ongoing.

  • No-Person-Hit Shooting, 3:14 a.m. 800 block Cherry Ave. (2nd dist.) Witness states she observed a dispute between several subjects in vehicles; preliminary investigation reveals an altercation between two groups in their vehicle; a unidentified suspect shot at another unidentified victim and missed. all parties left before police arrived; motive unknown, investigation ongoing.

  • No-Person-Hit Shooting (Feb. 23, 11:24 p.m.), 600 block Oro Court (b/w Golden-Daisy/1st dist.): Shots call, officers respond, didn't find victim of evidence of shooting but victim called to report he'd been shot at and not hit; no suspect information or motive; investigation ongoing.
