Long Beach Police Chief Luna Struck/Injured By Vehicle While In Walking In Crosswalk Near El Dorado Park Nature Center; He's Recovering, Driver Is Cooperating With Investigation

(February 6, 2021, 1;05 p.m..) -- Long Beach Police Chief Robert Luna was struck/injured by a vehicle while walking in a crosswalk at abuut 3:45 p.m. Feb 5. near the El Dorado Park Nature Center. He's recovering, the driver Is cooperating with investigation. LBPD has issued the following statement.

[LBPD text] On Friday, February 5, 2021, Long Beach Police Chief, Robert G. Luna, was walking around El Dorado Park in Long Beach. While Chief Luna was in the crosswalk of E. Spring Street, near the El Dorado Nature Center, he was struck by a truck that drove into the crosswalk. Chief Luna was knocked into lanes of traffic but was able to call for medical aid and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The driver of the truck stayed at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.

"I want to thank the responding officers and park rangers, City staff, Fire Department personnel, medical staff, and the many others that came to my aid during this incident," said Chief Luna. "I also want to thank everyone for their well-wishes, and I am thankful for all of the support I am receiving while I recuperate."

As Chief Luna recuperates, he is in constant contact with the Assistant Chief of Police and will remain engaged in department operations while receiving follow up care.

In response to our inquiry, LBPD Public Information Officer Arantxa Chavarria tells LBRPORT.com that at this time LBPD doessn't believe distracted driving or other driver impairment were factors. .
