(Jan. 20, 2019, 8:15 a.m.) -- On the weekend honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who preached non-violence, in or near the Central LB neighborhood park named in his honor where adults and children had gathered to enjoy a festival including music, dancing, food and more, LBREPORT.com has learned that within a one hour period, Long Beach police officers arrested two individuals allegedly carrying guns.

In preliminary information, LBPD Public Information Officer Lt. James Richardson tells LBREPORT.com:

  • On January 19, 2019 at 12:59 p.m., LBPD officers working at Martin Luther King Park at the conclusion of the MLK parade were on a call of a fight in the park and observed a man (adult) walking with a handgun in his hand. The suspect fled from officers on foot. The LBPD officers chased him on foot. They took him into custody without incident. The handgun he allegedly possessed was recovered for evidence. The suspect, an 18 year-old LB resident, was booked on suspicion of carrying a firearm in public and for being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm.

  • Less than an hour later at 1:56 p.m., officers working at Martin Luther King Park at the conclusion of the MLK parade conducted a traffic stop of a vehicle in the area of 20th St./MLK Ave. During the traffic stop they arrested the suspect driver on suspicion on being an ex-felon in possession of a firearm. The suspect/driver was a 24 year old Compton resident.

LBPD's investigation of both incident is ongoing.
