(Jan. 9, 2020, 8:40 a.m., updated 10:25 a.m.) -- LB Mayor Robert Garcia, who backed Sen. Kamala Harris until her campaign (in which he was CA co-chair) imploded before reachingIowa, has endorsed former VP/former Sen. Joe Biden for the Dem Party's presidential nomination. Garcia is cheduled to appear alongside Biden later today at a photo-op/press event using the Port and its billion-dollar Desmond Bridge replacement as backdrops.
[UPDATE] Garcia's move comes after several CA Dem electeds and Dem Party figures in recent days endorsed Biden: State Senators Bill Dodd, Cathleen Galgiani and Anthony Portantino; Assembly members Ken Cooley and Al Muratsuchi; L.A. County D.A. Jackie Lacy; and former state Senator/foremer CA Dem Party chair Art Torres, LA Community College District Board of Trustees president Andra Hoffman; Neysa Fligor, Los Altos City vice mayor; Maria Morales, El Monte City Council member; Denise Menchaca, San Gabriel City Council member; and Robert Gin, Alhambra Unified School District board member. [end UPDATE] Amnesia File: While Sen. Bernie Sanders was battling Sec'y of State Hillary Clinton in the June 2016 CA primary, Mayor Garcia introduced her at an election-eve LBCC "get out the vote" rally. A few weeks later, as a delegate to Democrats 2016 national convention, Garcia voted to nominate Clinton over Sanders. On the day before her November election defeat, Mayor Garcia webposted the following Facebook message: . I voted for Hillary Clinton and I'm looking forward to the election tomorrow. My vote is not a protest vote against Donald Trump, but a vote for Hillary. In fact, it's an enthusiastic vote to elect someone I believe is well qualified, ready on day one, and someone who is a fighter and never gives up. I believe her work as an attorney for children, as an advocate for the poor, as a progressive U.S. Senator, and as Secretary of State have provided her a worldview that is diverse and global. At an August 2019 LBCC rally/appearance by Sen. Sanders, Mayor Garcia was among those in LB's Dem establishment not visible at his event.
In October 2019, Mayor Garcia cancelled two "Meet the Mayor" events scheduled for Long Beach residents so he could travel to Iowa to campaign for Sen. Harris. (LB residents who'd RSVP'd for the "Meet the Mayor" event received an email telling them "because of a change in schedule, we won't be able to have this event this Saturday. We're sorry for any inconvenience." . .
In 2005, Garcia (then a City Hall aide to LB Councilman Frank Colonna, a Republican) launched an effort to revitalize LB's Young Republican organization and also worked to elect Colonna Mayor in 2006. When Colonna finished second to Bob Foster in the Mayor's race, Garcia moved into LB's disproportionately Dem-registered 1st Council district (where a Council incumbent was expected to seek Sac'to office), changed his registered voter party preference and was elected to the vacated seat in a no-runoff special election. Garcia has since been a Dem party loyalist, aligning himself with policies of CA Governor Gavin Newsom.
