(Jan. 23, 2020, 11:50 p.m.) -- A 32 year old LB woman who tried to cross Palo Verde Ave. north of Atherton St. at midblock was struck and killed on Wednesday night (Jan. 22) by a vehicle...and LBPD states in a release today (Jan. 23) that "speed, cell phone distraction and/or DUI are not considered factors in what occurred. LBPD's release says the woman had reached the number 1 (left lane) of southbound Palo Verde when she was struck and suffered critical injuries that she did not survive.

Votive memorial candles were visible 24 hours after the accident in the 1800 block of Palo Verde.

LBPD's release says officers responded and LBFD transported Kymberly Davenport, 32, of Long Beach to a hospital where she later succumbed to her injuries.

In its release, LBPD says that an 18 year old Downey man was driving southbound on Palo Verde north of Atherton in the #1 lane [left lane] in a 2019 Dodge pickup when the pedestrian (identified by LBPD as Ms. Danvenport) "entered into the southbound traffic lanes of Palo Verde Avenue from the west curb of Palo Verde Avenue, mid-block and outside of a crosswalk" and was struck by the pickup.

LBPD didn't provide an exact street number for the accident; the Votive candles were at roughly mid-block between Atherton St. and Marita St. LBREPORT.com found no crosswalk at Marita St., a little under 0.1 miles north (quick odometer check); the nearest crosswalk was at Atherton St. (0.1 miles south.)

"The driver cooperated with the investigation and was released from the scene pending further investigation. Speed, cell phone distraction and/or D.U.I. are not considered factors in this collision," LBPD's release states.
