(January 8, 2021, 1:50 p.m.) -- Long Beach had 36 murders in 2020 (up from 34 in 2019 and higher than LB's five-year-average of 31.) Our 2020 tally (chart by LBREPORT.com below) is from LBPD.

The Councilmembers in the districts with the three highest number of murders were endorsed/supported by the LB police officers' union (LBPOA PAC): CD 1/Zendejas; CD 9 (Richardson; and CD 6 (Andrews.)

  • LB's 1st Council district under Councilwoman Mary Zendejas had 9 murders plus one on the CD 1/CD 2 border. Councilwoman Zendejas was elected in a November 2019 no-runoff special election, assisted by $10,000 contributions each from LB's police officers union (LBPOA PAC), Mayor Robert Garcia, and immediate past incumbent (now state Senator) Lena Gonzalez. Their contributions exceeded allowable amounts to candidate campaigns, they avoided that limit by giving their sums to the LB's Firefighters union which formed an "independent" (non-candidate) run campaign that "independently" supported Zendejas. (LBREPORT.com named the LBPOA/Garcia/Gonzalez maneuver our 2019 "Outrage of the Year.")

  • LB's 9th Council district under Councilman (now Vice Mayor) Rex Richardson was second with 7.

  • Next, tied for third, were CD's 6 (Andrews) and CD 2 (Pearce) with 5 each.. Andrews was endorsed for re-election in 2020 (and defeated by Suely Saro.) CD 2 (Pearce, declined to seek a second term) had a murder on the border of CD 2/CD 4. Pearce declined to seek a second term; voters replaced her with LBPOA endorsee Cindy Allen.

LB's annual murder totals for the past seven years are:

    • 2020 = 36
    • 2019 = 34
    • 2018 = 30
    • 2017 = 22
    • 2016 = 33
    • 2015 = 36
    • 2014 = 23
    • 2013 = 33
    • 2012 = 30
