Senate Passes Energy Bill With LNG Provisions, 74-26; Feinstein & Boxer Vote "No"
(July 29, 2005) -- The U.S. Senate voted today (July 29) 74-26 to enact the Energy Policy Act of 2005...which includes provisions giving the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) exclusive powers in approving, siting and regulating Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) facilities.
California's two U.S. Senators, Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer, both Democrats, voted "no."
LBReport.com posts the full Senate vote below.
The Energy bill, which cleared the House on July 28, now goes to President Bush who has indicated he will sign it into law.
In connection with today's Senate vote, Senator Feinstein entered a statement in the Congressional Record, stating in part:
This bill gives the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission exclusive authority over siting LNG terminals. There are three projects proposed in California . It seems to me that the location of these projects should be left up to the State, not to the federal government. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission should ensure that the technicalities of natural gas delivery are taken care of, not where these facilities are located on the coastlines of our states.
